Why does a chat have an unread dot?

The Short Answer
A conversation is marked unread until you open it in PropKaki. It is keyed to your opening it here, not to whether you have read it on your phone — so a thread you answered on WhatsApp directly still shows a dot until you open it in Chats.
The dot means one thing: you have not opened this conversation in PropKaki.
What does the dot actually mean?
You have not opened it here. Opening the conversation in Chats clears it.
It is not a guess about whether you have dealt with the person — it is the plain fact of whether this screen has been opened on that thread.
Why is it different from my phone?
Because they are two different records. Your phone knows what you have opened on your phone; PropKaki knows what you have opened in Chats.
So a message you read and answered on WhatsApp directly can still carry a dot here, because as far as this screen is concerned you have not looked.
Why does everything look unread the first time?
The first time you open Chats, every conversation you have ever had qualifies — none of them have been opened on this screen.
Work down the list once and it settles.
Does the dot mean I need to do something?
It means unopened, which is not the same as unanswered.
A conversation your bot handled completely still shows a dot until you look at it — which is arguably the point, since a bot answering on your behalf is exactly the thing worth a glance.
