Why do I need a template to message someone?
Updated 1 September 2026
The Short Answer
WhatsApp lets you reply freely for 24 hours after someone messages you. After that it only delivers wording approved in advance. That is why a plain message to someone who went quiet is held with needs a template or a reply first.
This surprises everyone once. Here is the rule and the two ways past it.
What is the 24-hour rule?
WhatsApp lets you reply freely to anyone who messaged you in the last 24 hours. After that, it will only deliver a message whose wording has already been approved.
The clock restarts every time they write to you.
Is PropKaki blocking me?
The message is held because WhatsApp would not deliver it as written. PropKaki tells you before charging you rather than letting it fail quietly.
The hold reads needs a template or a reply first.
What are my two ways past it?
- Send an approved template — approved wording delivers at any time.
- Wait for them to write to you — that reopens the 24 hours and you can write freely again.
If you have no template yet, create one in Extensions → Templates. Approval usually takes minutes.
Does the rule apply to email?
No. This is a WhatsApp rule. Email has no window at all — you can email a prospect who last spoke to you a year ago.
That is sometimes the quicker answer than waiting for a template.
